Second Period Dooms Yellowjackets

Alex Thompson scored his first career goal Saturday vs. MSOE.
Box Score

MSOE 3, Yellowjackets 2

For the most part, the second period has been the best period of the year for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team. A majority of the goals the team has scored in 2014-15 have come in the middle frame. That was not the case Saturday, however.

Saturday night at Wessman Arena the Yellowjackets were solid in the first and third periods, but they self-destructed in the second. The Yellowjackets took eight penalties in the period and were outshot 17-2, giving the Milwaukee School of Engineering all the momentum they needed. The Raiders scored three times in the second and held on to pick up a 3-2 win at Wessman Arena.

The loss denied the Yellowjackets the opportunity to climb above the .500 mark for the first time since mid-November. Early on in the game, however, it looked like the Yellowjackets were on their way to a weekend sweep.

The Yellowjackets outshot MSOE 15-3 in the first period and picked up the period's only goal at 14:07. Tom Paine (Superior, Wis./Marshall School) took a shot from the right circle that was stopped by Raider goaltender Austin Campbell, but he left the rebound at the left of the goal and Tanner Dion (Hardisty, Alberta/Central Sedgewick) slid a backhand under Campbell and into the net for his eighth goal of the year, making it 1-0.

Early in the second period MSOE scored to tie the game, but the officials waved off the goal. The jubilation was short-lived, however, as seconds later the Raiders tied the game for real. A turnover from below the goal line made its way to the front of the net, and Casey Moneer scored his first goal of the season at 4:53 of the second to even the game at 1-1.

A few minutes later Yellowjacket freshman Cal Miska (Stacy, Minn./Centennial) was called for checking from behind and assessed a game misconduct. The penalties not only shortened the Yellowjacket bench, but it also put MSOE on a five minute power play. Just 90 seconds into the advantage they took the lead. Impeccable passing got the Yellowjacket penalty kill moving, and eventually the puck came to Cody Ganchar at the right post, where he was camped all along and just redirected the puck past Cory Simons (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) to make it 2-1.

Later in the period it went to 3-1 when the Raiders converted a 4-on-3 power play. The original shot came from the high slot and Gage Christianson got the deflection out front, tipping his fourth of the season past Simons.

The Yellowjackets regrouped between periods and came out flying in the third. The cut the lead in half just 2:16 into the period when Luke Karakas (Green Bay, Wis./East) took a shot from the high slot that was mishandled by Campbell. The puck bounced to the right of the goal and freshman Alex Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), who was making his Yellowjacket debut, won the race to the puck and slid it past Campbell for his first career goal. Patrick Kinkopf (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Gilmour Academy) also assisted as the Yellowjackets pulled to within 3-2.

Later in the period the Yellowjackets nearly tied the game on a fortuitous bounce. The puck was dumped in the MSOE zone and Campbell ventured out to play it. The puck took a strange hop off the end boards and caromed out front. Derrick Brooks (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba/Portage Collegiate Institute), appearing in just his second game of the year, got to the puck and put it on goal, but Campbell scrambled back in the play and made the save, preserving the lead.

In the final minute the Yellowjackets pulled Simons for the extra attacker, but they were unable to get the equalizer and fell to defeat.

Simons finished the game with 23 saves and had his record on the year fall to 4-4-0. At the other end Campbell got the win and made 33 saves.

For the game the Yellowjackets took eight nine penalties for 29 minutes, while MSOE took seven penalties for 22 minutes. The Raiders were 2-for-6 on the power play while the Yellowjackets were scoreless in three chances.

The Yellowjackets (7-8-0, 0-2 WIAC) return to WIAC play next weekend with a home-and-home series with UW-Stout. Friday night the teams will meet at Dunn County Arena in Menomonie. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live locally on 91.3 FM in Superior. If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in on the Internet through the 91.3 FM web site or the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
