Yellowjackets fall to Gustavus Adolphus

The Yellowjackets went on the road Saturday to put their four game winning streak on the line against Gustavus Adolphus, who were on a 17 game winning streak. In the end, it was the Yellowjackets who had their winning streak snapped, as Gustavus proved too much to handle.

Gustavus started out the match quickly, building a 5-1 lead as the Yellowjackets were forced to call a timeout. Following the timeout the Yellowjackets were able to go on a run of their own, taking a 12-11 lead following a block by Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) and Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley). From that point on it was all Gustavus, as they cruised to a 25-15 first set win.

The second set started out much like the first, with the Gusties jumping out to an early 6-2 lead before the Yellowjackets stormed back to tie it up at 8 apiece. The two teams then exchanged points as neither was able to gain much of an advantage. Gustavus then went on a little run to build a 19-14 cushion. The Yellowjackets were once again able to fight their way back by scoring four straight points. The Gusties pushed right back, going on a 3-0 run on their way to a 25-20 set victory to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set played out much like the first as Gustavus took an early 4-2 lead. The Yellowjackets tied it up 7-7 before Gustavus went on a 4-0 run to take back the lead. The Gusties scored the final seven points of the set en route to taking the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

The Yellowjackets struggled on the attack all match as they had a negative attack percentage in two sets, and a team attack percentage of .013. The Yellowjackets also committed 17 attack errors and 11 reception errors. Gustavus had a team attack percentage of .214.

The Yellowjackets (15-8, 4-1 UMAC) are back in action October 14 when they travel to River Falls, Wis. to take on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
