The Yellowjacket men's soccer team traveled over the bridge Thursday night to take on rival St. Scholastica in the second round of the border-battle. The Saints had taken the first match between these two teams 4-0 earlier in the season and the Yellowjackets were determined not to let history repeat itself.

St. Scholastica had other plans, as they jumped out to a three goal lead in the first half en route to a 3-1 victory.

The Saints scored the first goal of the match without even getting a shot on goal. A St. Scholastica crossing attempt was deflected off of a Yellowjacket defender past goalkeeper Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead at 5:20.

Shawayne Folkes beat Wilhelm on the far post less than 10 minutes later to give St. Scholastica a 2-0 lead 14 minutes into the match. Sean Morgan capped the first half scoring when he went far post to make it 3-0 St. Scholastica at 41:52.

The first half was all St. Scholastica as they outshot the Yellowjackets 12-6, holding a 3-1 advantage in shots-on-goal. The first half was also filled with very physical play, as it always is with these two teams, with 13 fouls being called.

The second half played out just as physical as the first, with five fouls being called in the first 10 minutes. It was at this point that the match became more than chippy.

St. Scholastica's Kyle Farrar was issued a yellow card caution at 58:19. Less than two minutes later, at 60:24 the Saints Dale Hayes was issued a red card and was ejected from the match. The Yellowjackets David Villani (Adelaide, South Australia/Rostrevor College) was issued a yellow card caution of his own at 62:21.

Following the barrage of cards, the two teams resumed playing physical, but relatively clean, soccer. After two consecutive St. Scholastica fouls, the Saints Kyle Hewitt was issued a yellow card caution at 77:22. The Yellowjackets capitalized on the free kick, cutting the lead to 3-1 as Erik Boese (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) fed Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka), who headed the ball past the Saints goalkeeper for his fifth goal of the season.

This goal led to another barrage of yellow cards as the Saints Sean Morgan was issued one at 78:21. The Yellowjackets Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) was then issued a yellow card at 78:48. Then Gustafson was issued a card at 80:22 and one minute later the Yellowjackets bench was issued a yellow card.

The Yellowjackets made the last 10 minutes of the match very interesting as they had three shots turned away by the Saints goalkeeper, but ultimately fell 3-1. Following the conclusion of the match, the Yellowjackets Ryan Linsmayer (Dresser, Wis./Osceola) was issued a red card ejection.

The second half was much more even than the first half, with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Saints 9-8 with a 4-2 shots-on-goal advantage. Overall the Saints held advantage in shots 20-15 and the advantage in shots-on-goal 8-5.

There were eight yellow cards and two red cards issued in the match. The Yellowjackets were issued five yellow cards and one red card and the Saints were issued three yellow cards and one red card.

Wilhelm, who started in goal for the Yellowjackets, saw his season record drop to 10-4-0, allowing three goals while making five saves.

Sandy Davidson-Hunt got the win for the Saints, allowing one goal while making four saves.

The Yellowjackets (11-4-0, 5-2-0 UMAC) go back on the road Saturday, October 17 when they travel to New Ulm, Minn. to take on UMAC foe Martin Luther College. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
