Yellowjackets Split at St. Kate's Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket volleyball team went on the road Friday to partake in the St. Kate's Invite. Coming off of a loss Wednesday at UW-River Falls, the Yellowjackets were looking for a pair of wins to get back on track. The two opponents the Yellowjackets would face day one were Macalester College and Luther College.

Yellowjackets 3, Macalester 0

In their opening match of the tournament the Yellowjackets faced off against Macalester. The tournament started out exactly as the Yellowjackets had hoped as they swept Macalester 25-23, 25-14, 25-19.

The first set began as even as they come as neither team was able to generate much separation. Following a 5-5 tie, Macalester went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-6 lead. With Ana Biscaia (Curitiba, Brazil/Colégio Positivo) serving, the Yellowjackets were able to rally back, scoring eight straight points to take a 14-12 lead. Macalester then went on a 3-0 run to regain the lead at 15-14. The two teams began exchanging points before the Yellowjackets were able to take the first set 25-23 on an Ashlee Bayer (Cameron, Wis./Cameron) kill.

The second set appeared as though it was going to be as back-and-forth as the first one, with the teams playing to a 6-6 tie. The Yellowjackets then went on a 4-0 run and took control of the set from there. Macalaster was never closer than three points the rest of the way as the Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set began much the same way as the previous two, with both teams playing to an early 6-6 tie. Following a Molly Trapp (Esko, Minn./Esko) kill, the Yellowjackets went on a 4-1 run to build an 11-7 lead. Macalester stormed back, using a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. With Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) serving, the Yellowjackets went on a 6-0 run, taking a 22-17 lead. The Yellowjackets were able to cruise the rest of the way as they took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

Bandelin paced the Yellowjackets offensively with 12 kills while contributing 10 digs on defense. Bayer was not far behind with 11 kills and a team leading three blocks.

Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) was her usual self, contributing 37 set assists.

Karlie Leif (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) led the way defensively with a team leading 26 digs.

Luther 3, Yellowjackets 0

The second set of the day pitted the Yellowjackets against Luther College. The Yellowjackets were unable to build off of their previous victory as they fell in straight sets 11-25, 22-25, 17-25.

The Yellowjackets started off strong in the first set, taking an early 5-2 lead. This lead was short lived as the Vikings went on a 10-1 run to take a 12-6 lead. That run seemed to take the air out of the Yellowjackets sails as they were only able to score five more points in the set, dropping the set 25-11.

The second set began with the Yellowjackets once again jumping out to an early 5-3 lead. The Vikings went on a run of their own to take a 9-7 lead. The Yellowjackets fought back to tie it up at 9-9 following a block by Bayer and Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley). The two teams went back-and-forth before Luther went on a 6-1 run to build a 17-12 lead. The Yellowjackets fought their way back again, climbing within one point at 22-23 on a Bandelin kill. The lead proved to be too much to overcome, as Luther scored the final two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets and Vikings once again battled in the third set. Luther took an early 8-4 lead, but the Yellowjackets fought back to tie it up at 12-12. Luther used a late 6-0 run to build a 20-13 lead that the Yellowjackets were unable to overcome as the Vikings took the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Bailey Romans (Duluth, Minn./East) paced the Yellowjacket offense with seven kills. VerWay had 21 set assists and nine digs to lead the Yellowjackets in both categories. Bayer led the team with three blocks.

The match was marred by errors for the Yellowjackets as they had 21 attack errors and eight return errors.

The Yellowjackets (16-10, 4-1 UMAC) will be back in action Saturday for day two of the St. Kate's Invite. They take on Wartburg College at 9:00 a.m, followed by a match against tournament host St. Catherine at 1:00 p.m.
