Yellowjackets too much for the Vikings

Ashlee Bayer and Emily VerWay starred for the Yellowjackets Sunday.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Bethany Lutheran College 0

The Yellowjacket volleyball team played a rare Sunday match when they played host to Bethany Lutheran College. Although the two teams are conference opponents, this was a non-conference match-up between the two Upper Midwest Athletic Conference schools.

This match was never in doubt, however, as the Yellowjackets jumped all over the Vikings from the opening serve to build a 12-3 first set lead following an Anna Hendrix (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) block. From that point on the Yellowjackets cruised to a 25-12 as they never trailed in the opening set win.

The second set was close early with the Yellowjackets holding a 6-4 lead. A two-point deficit was the closest that the Vikings would get as the Yellowjackets broke it open on their way to taking set two, 25-14. As it was in the first set, the second set was all Yellowjackets as they never relinquished the lead.

The third set played much like the first two. Bethany Lutheran had an early 2-1 lead, but after that it was all Yellowjackets as they scored eight of the last 9 points to take the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

Ashlee Bayer (Cameron, Wis./Cameron) paced the Yellowjackets offensively with nine kills on 11 attacks. Bayer also added three blocks.  Bailey Romans (Duluth, Minn./East) had seven kills on a day that the Yellowjackets were very balanced offensively.  Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) once again led the Yellowjackets in set assists with 21. Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) filled the score sheet as she led the team defensively with 14 digs. Bandelin also had the team lead with four service aces while adding four kills offensively.  Romans and Anna Hendrix (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) tied for the team lead with four blocks apiece.

As a team the Yellowjacket attack percentage was .278.  Bethany Lutheran struggled in that aspect all match as they committed 27 attack errors and had a -.048 team attack percentage.

The Yellowjackets (13-7, 2-1 UMAC) are at home Wednesday when they play host to rival St. Scholastica. The UMAC contest will take place at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
