Yellowjackets use Strong Second Half to Defeat Cobbers

Box Score

Yellowjackets 86, Concordia-Moorhead 77

The 2015-16 season will have a lot of changes for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team. This season will mark the first season in the UMAC after winning the regular season championship in the WIAC. The Yellowjackets  also graduated all-time leading scorer Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) following last season, so they will be looking to establish a new identity moving forward as they hope to compete for another championship.

The first step in that process took place Friday night when they traveled to Moorhead, Minn. to take on the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead. The Yellowjackets started out the season on a strong note, as they defeated the Cobbers 86-77.

This game was a back and forth affair for much of the first half, as neither team was able to gain much of an advantage. The Cobbers built a seven point lead, going up 16-9 with 2:11 left in the first quarter, as it looked like they were ready to break the game open. The Yellowjackets would have none of it as they stormed back to take a 19-16 lead at 8:26 in the second quarter off of pair of Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon) free throws.

The rest of the quarter saw the teams once again exchange baskets back-and-forth as they went into the break locked at 32 apiece.

The Yellowjackets struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the first half as they shot 33.3% from the field and 1-4 from beyond the 3-point arc. They were aided by free throws, as they went 15-23 from the charity stripe.

Concordia-Moorhead shot 39.3% in the first half, hitting 4-11 from beyond the arc. The Cobbers were only able to get to the free throw line nine times, hitting six, as the Yellowjackets played a clean half defensively.

The Yellowjackets came out of the break on a flurry, building a 46-36 lead that was capped by a pair of Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) jumpers. The Yellowjackets never allowed the Cobbers within six points the rest of the quarter, as they went into the fourth with a 59-52 lead.

The fourth quarter saw the Yellowjackets maintain their lead, pushing it to double figures at multiple points. An Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) 3-pointer at 2:15 pushed the lead to 83-70, as the Yellowjackets used free throws to seal the 86-77 victory.

Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) led all Yellowjackets scorers, scoring 19 points in 28 minutes off the bench. Kontny also had three rebounds and an assist.

Nelson was the Yellowjackets best all-around player, filling up the box-score with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Skalmsoki had 13 points, while Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) had 10.

The Cobbers were paced by a pair of players with double-doubles in Olivia Johnson, who had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Jenna Januschka, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 48.1% from the field, while going 6-11 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Cobbers shot 51.9% from the field, while going 7-17 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Yellowjackets held the advantage in free throws, hitting 28-42. The Cobbers went 16-20 from the free throw line.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (1-0-0, 0-0-0 UMAC) is a non-conference matchup Sunday, November 15 against the University of Dubuque in the 2015-16 home opener. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymasium is set for 3:00 p.m.
