Big Third Period Pushes Stout Past Yellowjackets

Daniel Litchke scored a goal and had an assist in Friday's loss at UW-Stout.
Box Score

Stout 6, Yellowjackets 2

Both the Yellowjackets and UW-Stout entered Friday's WIAC contest needing to play with a little bit of desparation. The Yellowjackets were winless in six straight, while the Blue Devils were blown out at home by UW-Eau Claire Thursday. When the dust settled in Menomonie, only one team showed that requisite desparation, and unfortunately for Yellowjacket fans it wasn't the visitors.

After the Yellowjackets scored to take a lead early in the second period the Blue Devils came roaring back, scoring five unanswered goals to cruise to a 6-2 win at the Fanetti Community Center.

Despite only holding a 9-7 edge in shots on goal in the third period, Stout scored three times, including a pair of goals 20 seconds apart to put an end to the night's drama.

The game's start was good for the Yellowjackets, as they controlled the play early. However, just over three minutes into the opening period the Yellowjackets took a penalty to swing the momentum toward the home team. With Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) serving a minor for cross checking the Blue Devils converted when Danny Ryan drove the net and poked home a centering pass on the power play to give Stout the 1-0 lead at 4:16.

Stout continued to control the play, owning the territorial advantage for much of the period. At one point the Blue Devils had an 8-2 edge in shots on net. The Yellowjackets closed that gap late, evening the shots on goal 9-9 by period's end, and in the final minute evening the score as well.

With under a minute left Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) made a strong move from below the goal line to the front of the net and Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior) pounded the loose puck into the net for his second of the season to tie the game. Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden) also assisted on the goal that came with 35.8 seconds left in the period.

Second periods have been rough on the Yellowjackets all season, and despite early success Friday was no exception. Stout outshot the Yellowjackets 14-9 in the period and by the end had a one goal lead.

But it was the Yellowjackets who pulled ahead with a power play goal early.

Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas), an offensive catalyst on the blue line throughout his time at UW-Superior, fired from the high slot and beat Stout goaltender Chase Hollander to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead at 6:27 of the period. Litchke and Sallhag assisted.

But as quickly as the Yellowjackets took the lead they gave it back.

A mere 17 seconds after the goal they again went shorthanded, and again Stout scored. This time it was team scoring leader Justin Moody doing the damage, scoring his second of the year 10 seconds into the power play to tie the game at 2-2. Then at 12:13 of the period the Blue Devils got the eventual game winner when Shayne McLaughlin converted on a 2-on-1, beating Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone) high on the glove side to make it 3-2.

In the third period it was all Stout. Craig Lindegard scored on a rebound at 7:24 to push the lead to 4-2. Then Karl Andersen pounced a loose puck in front of fink and scored at 14:39 to push it to 5-2. Just 20 seconds later the Blue Devils closed out the scoring on a goal by Jake Useldinger.

Fink had a tough night in goal for the Yellowjackets, seeing 32 shots and stopping 26. His record for the year falls to 1-3-2. At the other end Hollander made 24 saves.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for 10 minutes in the game, while Stout took eight penalties for 16 minutes.

Power plays have been tough to come by for the Yellowjackets in 2015-16, but they received an abundance Friday. Unfortunately they weren't sharp with the man advantage and finished the game 1-for-8. Stout, meanwhile, went 1-for-5.

Things don't get any easier for the Yellowjackets Saturday, as they travel to K.B. Willett Arena to take on nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. and it can be heard live on 91.3 FM in Superior, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. Jon Garver will have the call.
