Pointers Push Past Yellowjackets

Jordan Neduzak had a goal and an assist Saturday at Stevens Point.
Box Score

Stevens Point 5, Yellowjackets 3

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team is in a slump. After starting the year 3-0-0 the Yellowjackets came into the weekend on a six-game winless skid. The slump continued with a listless effort at UW-Stout Friday, setting the stage for Saturday's game against the two-time national runners-up from UW-Stevens Point.

Stevens Point also entered the game reeling a bit. The Pointers started the season 6-0-0 but were winless in their last four entering play Saturday.

Something had to give Saturday night, and it was the Pointers who put an end to their skid.

The Yellowjackets had two leads in the game but they weren't able to hold either one and they fell to UW-Stevens Point 5-3 at K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.

The fireworks started early in the game, with each team scoring on its first shot of the contest.

Stevens Point drew first blood, taking the opening faceoff into the Yellowjacket zone where Joey Haydock found a loose puck in the crease and poked it in for the 1-0 lead just 41 seconds into play.

The Yellowjackets answered immediately, taking the ensuing faceoff into the Stevens Point zone. Lukas Denk (Brno, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Globe) played the puck from the right wing over to the left side and Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) one-timed a shot from the top of the left circle past Stevens Point goaltender Max Milosek to tie the game 1-1 just 15 seconds after the Pointers opened the scoring.

Stevens Point continued to press in the period and had a territorial advantage, but it was the Yellowjackets who pulled ahead. Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) stripped a Pointer defenseman of the puck in the neutral zone and went in alone on the breakaway, faking forehand and lifting a backhand over the glove of Milosek to put the Yellowjackets ahead 2-1 at 11:32.

But the Pointers drew even before the period was done. Lawrence Cornellier took a pass in front of the Yellowjacket goal and chipped the puck over a sprawling Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane) to make it 2-2 with 2:03 left in the period.

The trend of Stevens Point owning a territorial advantage continued for most of the second period, but the Yellowjackets weathered the storm. Then, with just 1:56 to play the Yellowjackets regained the lead. Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) entered the Pointer zone on the right wing and wired a wrist shot from the top of the right cirlce past Milosek and it was 3-2 Yellowjackets.

As fast as the lead came it evaporated, however, as Cornellier scored his second of the game just 36.8 seconds to play in the period, chipping a shot from the left of the goal past Wood to tie the game 3-3.

Stevens Point scored the eventual game winning goal at 5:43 of the third period when a missed Yellowjacket clearing attempt stayed in the zone and a Jono Davis shot got past Wood to make it 4-3.

Later in the period Neduzak had a chance for his second goal of the game, but he was turned aside by Milosek on a partial breakaway. With just 3:49 to play in regulation Stauber was called for holding. The Yellowjackets killed off the penalty and as Stauber came out of the box Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor)  broke behind the Stevens Point defense, but Milosek denied his chance at a tying goal and the Yellowjackets continued to trail.

Then in the final minute the Pointers sealed the game as Cornellier finished off the hat trick, scoring into the empty net to make the final score 5-3.

Wood, appearing in just his third collegiate game (after two relief appearances last season at Westfield State), was solid in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing his first college start with 34 saves. At the other end Milosek wasn't nearly as busy, making 15 saves in the win.

There were few penalties called in the first and third periods, but there was more fire, and chippiness in the second. For the game the Yellowjackets took six penalties for 12 minutes while the Pointers took five penalties for 10 minutes. Both teams went scoreless on the power play, the Yellowjackets in two chances and the Pointers in three.

With the loss the Yellowjacket winless skid has now reached eight games (0-6-2). The Yellowjackets (3-6-2, 0-2-0 WIAC) will try to close out the first half of the season with a win when they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday, December 11. The Yellowjackets will be collecting toys for the Superior Toys for Tots holiday toy drive at the game. Fans attending are asked to bring a new, unopened toy to the game to be donated to those in need during the holiday season. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on 91.3 FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. The game can also be viewed live through UW-Superior's official online streaming partner, the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
