Yellowjackets Defeat Stout, Snap Losing Streak

It's been almost a month since the Yellowjacket men's basketball team tasted victory. With 25 days between victories, the Yellowjackets got a much needed win Wednesday when the UW-Stout Blue Devils came to town. The game was close until the very end, but the Yellowjackets hung on and came away with a 67-59 victory.

The win snaps a six-game losing streak for the Yellowjackets, who picked up just their second win in their last 12 games.

Despite a broken nose, Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) got the Yellowjackets off to a great start in the first half. He scored eight of the team's first 10 points, helping Superior to a 10-4 lead with 16:53 left in the first half.

Even while being undermanned, the Blue Devils responded. It took them a little while, but they eventually tied the score at 14-14 on a three-pointer by Brett Ahensmacher with 11:36 left.

Over that remaining time, the game would feature seven lead changes and four ties. The Blue Devils took the lead for the rest of the half on a layup by Sam Ortmann with 4:32 left, and Superior would enter the locker room down five points, 35-30.

Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) got the Yellowjackets on the board just 16 seconds into the second half to cut the Blue Devils lead to three points. Two minutes later, the Yellowjackets would take a 36-35 lead thanks to a layup by Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton).

The Blue Devils wouldn't go away, though. They took the lead back at 42-40 on a layup by D'Marcco Patrick with just over 14 minutes left in the second half. The Yellowjackets would take the lead for good with 11:29 remaining on a Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) jumper, making the score 46-44.

Superior would hold a lead as large as seven points before Stout trimmed it down to just one point with with 1:51 left to play.

Lindblom shut the door on the Blue Devils with a basket in the paint to make the score 62-59. The Yellowjackets would close out the Blue Devils in the remaining 1:29 of the game to secure the victory.

Lindblom led the way for Superior with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and eight rebounds. Schradle finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Ketz finished with 13 points.

A difficult season will come to a close Saturday for the Yellowjackets, which will also be Superior's last game as a member of the WIAC. The Yellowjackets will host UW-Stevens Points at The Mertz. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
