Progress. If there's one word to describe the first two weeks of play for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team, it's progress. After getting shutout in the season opener, the Yellowjackets improved despite a loss at Saint Mary's last Saturday. Wednesday they were on the brink of victory over former WIAC foe UW-River Falls, only to allow a late goal to tie it and fall in overtime on a controversial call.

No such worries for Head Coach Morgan MacLean and his charges Saturday. The Yellowjackets got a goal midway through the first half that held up, then added some insurance in the final minute to claim their first win of the season, and first win in UMAC play, 2-0 over North Central University on a perfect Saturday afternoon at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex.

With the win the Yellowjackets (1-3-0, 1-0-0 UMAC) currently sit in a three-way tie for first place in the UMAC after the first day of conference play.

The Yellowjackets carried the play early and had a couple of early opportunities, only to be turned away by North Central goalkeeper Heather Campbell. They were finally able to break through midway through the first half when Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) sent a rocket of a shot from the middle of the field past Campbell to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead. Coombs' first goal of the season came at 25:57.

After the Yellowjacket goal, however, it was North Central that gathered the momentum. The Rams carried the play for much of the rest of the first half. Still, despite the advantage in possession, the Rams weren't able to generate much in the way of quality scoring chances. As the teams went to halftime the Yellowjackets had the one-goal lead as well as the edge in shots, 6-4, and shots on goal, 3-2.

In the second half the Yellowjackets got their collective legs back underneath them and carried the play for much of the 45 minutes. Like a running team in football, the Yellowjackets grinded away at the Rams and ran the clock down without giving them much in the way of quality scoring chances. When the Rams did generate a good scoring chance, Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) was there to make the save.

With time winding down on the clock the Yellowjackets continued to exert their will on the Rams, and gained some insurance in the final minute. Coombs sent a long shot in on goal that Campbell stopped, but Hannah Buchite (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) was there to hammer home the rebound and give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead with 38 seconds to play. The goal was the first career marker for the senior captain.

The Yellowjackets forced the play as the final seconds ticked away, giving them the shutout and their first win of the 2015 campaign.

Allie Paige started in goal for the Yellowjackets and played the first half, making two saves. Henderson played the second half and finished with three saves. At the other end Campbell made four saves for North Central.

The Yellowjackets are now off for 11 days. Next up is the "Border Battle" with the College of St. Scholastica Wednesday, September 23. Game time between the Yellowjackets and the Saints at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex is set for 2:00 p.m.
