Schradle and Lindblom Lead Yellowjackets Past Morris

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was back in action Saturday afternoon to take on UMAC foe Minnesota Morris. The Yellowjackets were looking to start 2016 out on a high note after ending 2015 with a victory.

Fortunately for the Yellowjackets, they did just that as they dispatched Morris by a final score of 85-74.

The Yellowjackets started out fast in this matchup, with back-to-back 3-pointers by Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) and Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) to build a 6-2 lead. The Cougars fought back to tie up the game at 6-6 with 17:32 remaining.

The Yellowjackets were on fire from deep to start the game, as they hit their first seven 3-point attempts to build a 31-17 lead with 11:03 remaining in the first half. Morris refused to go away despite the early double-digit deficit, closing out the half on an 11-5 run to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 47-43 going into the break.

The second half saw a back and forth affair between the two teams, as the Yellowjackets would push their lead to eight points on two separate occasions just to see the Cougars fight back to cut the lead to four. The Yellowjackets used an 8-0 run late in the second half to build a 75-62 lead with 3:45 remaining. That run marked the beginning of the end for the Cougars, as the Yellowjackets never let Morris within seven points the rest of the game.

As they have all season, Schradle and Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) lead the Yellowjackets in this matchup. Schradle finished with a game high 29 points to go along with his nine rebounds and six assists. Lindblom finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to finish with his second double-double of the season and his career.

Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) also had a solid showing for the Yellowjackets, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds to just miss out on his first career double-double. Kalien chipped in 11 for the Yellowjackets.

Morris was led by CD Douglas, who finished with 23 points, five rebound, three assists, and two steals. Tyler Ukkelberg was the only other Cougar in double figures, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 48.4% from the field, hitting 9-24 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 14-20 from the free throw line.

Morris shot 43.5% from the field, hitting 4-15 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 16-25 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with eight turnovers. The Cougars finished with 11.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (6-5, 3-1 UMAC) is a trip to St. Bonafacius, Minn. Sunday, January 3 to take on UMAC foe Crown College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
