Yellowjackets Survive Scare from Bethany Lutheran

Box Score

Yellowjackets 75, Bethany Lutheran 66

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team has been on a roll for nearly two full months. They entered Saturday's game on top of the UMAC and on an 11 game winning streak. The Yellowjackets were looking to push that streak to 12 as they faced off against Bethany Lutheran, a team that they defeated earlier in the season to start the winning streak.

In a game that was a fight until the finish, the Yellowjackets came out on top to push the winning streak to 12 games.

Things looked good from the get-go for the Yellowjackets, as they opened the game on an 8-2 run that was capped by a Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) Layup. Bethany Lutheran fought back, taking an 11-10 lead with 5:30 remaining in the quarter. The Yellowjackets quickly erased that deficit, going on a 9-0 run over the next two and a half minutes, capped off by an Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) 3-pointer, to retake the lead 19-11. The Yellowjackets pushed the lead to double-figures before the end of the quarter, as they went into the first break with a 23-13 lead.

The second quarter did not play out at all like the first. Bethany Lutheran came out firing, looking to cut into the Yellowjacket lead. The Yellowjacket lead slowly disappeared, as they saw themselves nursing a 34-33 lead with 3:42 remaining in the quarter. The Yellowjackets closed out the second on a 5-2 run, capped by a Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) jumper, to go into halftime holding a 39-35 lead.

The third quarter has been the Yellowjackets quarter all season. That was not so true in this game. Bethany Lutheran once again came out firing to tie the game up at 42-42 with 5:59 remaining in the quarter. The Vikings took the lead on a pair of free throws with 5:33 remaining, but the Yellowjackets fought back to retake the lead at 49-47 on an Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) layup with 2:28 remaining. The lead was short lived, as Bethany Lutheran managed to tie the game up at 55-55 going into the final break.

Bethany Lutheran took the lead early in the fourth quarter and held onto it for over seven minutes as they looked to pull off the upset. The Yellowjackets would have none of it, as they retook the lead on a Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) layup with 2:41 remaining, ending the game on a 13-0 run to put away the Vikings.

Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon) led the Yellowjackets in this one, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Larson finished with 11 points and four steals. Lindberg also finished with 11 points, while Kontny chipped in 10.

Bethany Lutheran was led by Minnie Frederick and Briana Brandts, who finished with 19 points each. Haley Sandin was the only other Viking in double-figures, finishing with 14 points.

The Yellowjackets shot 45% from the field, going 2-16 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 19-34 from the free throw line.

Bethany Lutheran shot 44.6% from the field, going 3-15 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 13-19 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 11 turnovers. Bethany Lutheran finished with 14.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (15-2, 10-0 UMAC) is a road trip Friday, January 29 to Ashland, Wis. to take on UMAC foe Northland College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
