Yellowjackets Fall in Close Game to Northland

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Friday when the traveled to Ashland, Wis. to take on UMAC foe Northland College. The Yellowjackets were looking for another UMAC win following their games last weekend in which they beat both Martin Luther and Bethany Lutheran.

By the time the final buzzer sounded, it was the Lumberjacks, not the Yellowjackets, who were on top as the Yellowjackets fell on the road by a final score of 61-58.

This game was as close as they come in the first half. The Yellowjackets took a 4-2 lead with 17:41 remaining on a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) layup, only to see Northland take the lead back 6-4 on their next two possessions. The Lumberjacks started to break the game open midway through the half, opening up a 19-12 lead. The Yellowjackets did not falter as they cupped away at the Northland lead to tie up the game at 21-21 with 7:09 remaining on a Cade Stackpool (Virginia, Minn./Virginia) layup and free throw. The half continued to play out this way, with the two teams knotted up at 32-32 as they went into the half.

The second half saw more of the same from these two teams, as the lead kept changing between teams each possession. Northland went on a 6-0 run midway through the half to take a 50-45 lead with 10:33 remaining and the Yellowjackets were once again forced to fight back from a deficit. Twice the Yellowjackets cut the Northland led down to one, but they ran out of time in this one as a Schradle 3-pointer as time expired was off the mark.

Schradle finished the game with his ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 28 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block.

Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Yellowjackets.

Northland was led by Thomas Whiting, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Dan Campion just missed out on a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Rijo Jackson chipped in 10 points for the Lumberjacks.

The Yellowjackets shot 35.3% from the field, going 1-10 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 21-30 from the free throw line.

Northland shot 39.3% from the field, going 6-21 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 7-11 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 15 turnovers. The Lumberjacks finished with 10.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-10, 6-5 UMAC) is a trip to Hancock, Mich. Saturday, January 30 to take on Finlandia University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
