Yellowjackets Tame Lions

Box Score

Yellowjackets 81, Finlandia 72

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was badly in need of a pick-me-up following Friday night's heartbreaking loss at the hands of Northland College. Saturday saw them on the road to take on Finlandia University in a rematch of a game earlier in the season that the Yellowjackets won 83-76 at home.

After falling behind in the first half, the Yellowjackets completed the comeback in the second to defeat the Lions 81-72.

This game had the feeling of a blowout early on, as the Yellowjackets opened up the game on an 8-0 run that was capped by a Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) fast break layup. Finlandia answered with a run of their own, reeling of a 13-0 run to take the lead 13-8 with 10:22 remaining in the first half. The Yellowjackets fought their way back, retaking the lead 14-13 with 6:50 remaining on a Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) fast break layup. Finlandia would take the lead back from the Yellowjackets and watch it grow to as many as six points as the Yellowjackets went into the half trailing 29-26.

The second half saw the Yellowjackets quickly erase the Lions lead, as they tied the game up at 32-32 on a Milenkovic layup with 16:31 remaining, then took the lead for good at 35-32 on a Lindblom layup and free throw. With the lead back in their hands, the Yellowjackets turned on the jets as they pushed their lead to 67-56 with 4:23 remaining on a Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) layup. Finlandia tried to fight back into the game, but the Yellowjackets were able to seal the game with free throws.

Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) continued his impressive junior campaign, finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season. Schradle also finished with three steals and two assists.

Milenkovic finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the first double-double of his career. He also had four assists in the game.

Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) had 14 points for the Yellowjackets, while Scott added 13 and Lindblom chipped in 11.

Finlandia was led by Jordan LaPlant, who had a game high 21 points. Brandon Robinette finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Marcus Geralds and Terrance Fuller each chipped in 11.

For the game, the Yellowjackets shot 47.5% from the field, going 4-17 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 19-28 from the free throw line.

The Lions shot 37.9% from the field, going 3-20 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 19-34 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 10 turnovers. Finlandia finished with nine.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (10-10, 6-5 UMAC) is a home matchup Friday, February 5 against Crown College. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
