Yellowjackets Snap Winless Streak

Box Score

Yellowjackets 6, Finlandia 2

The Yellowjackets opened up the 2015-16 season on a strong note, going 3-0-1 over the first four games. Unfortunately the rest of 2015 was not very kind, as the Yellowjackets closed out the first half of the season going 0-8-1.

Tuesday night marked the beginning of the second half of the season, as the calendar year flipped to 2016, with the Yellowjackets looking to make it a good start to the year as they faced off against Finlandia.

They did that and more as they dismantled the Lions by a final score of 6-2.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring at 5:47 in the first. Tyler Nystrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) took a rebound off of a Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden) shot and beat the Finlandia goalie stick side to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Sallhag and Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) had the assists on the even strength goal

Five minutes later, at the 10:30 mark, the Yellowjackets scored again to make it 2-0. Once again it was Nystrom who got the goal, his third of the season, as he took a loose puck across the crease and fired a wrist shot that beat the goal high glove side. As with the first goal, Neduzak and Sallhag had the assists.

Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) made it 3-0 Yellowjackets at the 11:56 mark of the second with his eight goal of the year. Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) carried the puck across the front of the net and fed Svensson, who fired a wrist shot that beat the goalie stick side. Ecklund and Matt Audette (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) had the assists on the even strength tally.

Finlandia cut the Yellowjacket lead to 3-1 at the 14:01 mark of the second when Seth Ensor beat Yellowjacket goaltender Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane) glove side on a pass of the end board. James Devlin and David Higgs had the assists on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets answered right back at the 16:56 mark of the second on Svensson's second goal of the game and ninth of the season. Svensson managed to chop a bouncing puck toward the goal that bounced past the Finlandia goalie. Wes Judnick (Virginia, Minn./Virginia) and Ecklund had the assists on the goal.

Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) pushed the Yellowjacket lead to 5-1 less than a minute later, at the 17:37 mark, with his third of the year. Stauber took a feed from Jimmy Hughes (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) and fired a one timer that beat the Finlandia goalie glove side. Hughes and David Kenney (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) had the assists on the goal.

Finlandia scored their second of the game at the 15:16 mark of the third when Cam Wirick beat Wood on a breakaway. Andrew Huckleby and Francois Cote assisted on the even strength tally.

The scoring was capped off by Ecklund at the 18:46 mark of the third, as he won a faceoff in the defensive zone, carried the puck all the way across the ice and fired a wrist shot that beat the Finlandia goalie glove side for his sixth of the season. By the time the final horn sounded the Yellowjackets had scored six goals to set a new season high.

Wood got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and earned his first win, allowing two goals while making 34 saves. He moves to 1-3-0 on the season

Matt Young started in goal for Finlandia, allowing six goals while making 35 saves. Young moves to 0-1-1 on the season.

There were very few penalties called in this matchup. The Yellowjackets took two penalties for four minutes, while Finlandia took three penalties for six minutes. The Yellowjackets were 0-3 on the power play. Finlandia was 0-2.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (4-8-2, 0-2-0 WIAC) is a home non-conference matchup against Concordia-Moorhead. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. The broadcast can be heard live on 93.1 FM in Superior with the pre-game show starting at 6:45. The game can also be viewed live through UW-Superior's official online streaming partner, the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
