Yellowjackets Fall to UMD

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Wednesday when they traveled over the bridge to take on Minnesota Duluth in a non-conference match up. Coming into the game, the Yellowjackets were riding a three game winning streak and were looking to push it to four against their Division II opponent.

The Yellowjackets hung tough against the Bulldogs but ended up on the losing end of this match up, falling by a final score of 89-63.

The Yellowjackets found themselves in a hole early in this matchup, as UMD opened the game on a 7-0 run. Despite the early hole, the Yellowjackets were able to fight back, tying the game at 9-9 on an Andreas Preisler (Solrod, Denmark/Solrod Gymnasium) 3-pointer with 15:07 remaining. Less than a minute later, the Yellowjackets took the lead at 12-11 on a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) free throw. The lead was short lived, as the Bulldogs converted a layup on their next possession to go up 13-12.

A Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and-1 layup with 11:36 remaining knotted these two teams back up at 15-15. The Bulldogs retook the lead on their next possession, converting a layup to go up 17-15. The Yellowjackets fought hard to keep this game close after UMD went on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to 25-24 with 7:53 remaining on a Schradle layup. The Bulldogs started to pull away from the Yellowjackets has the first half wore on, going into halftime with a 47-34 lead.

Schradle opened the second half with a 3-pointer to cut the Bulldog lead to 47-37 and it looked as though the Yellowjackets would be able to fight their way back into this matchup. In the end, the Yellowjackets ran out of steam in the second half of this matchup, as UMD pushed their lead to 28 points en route to the victory.

Schradle, the defending UMAC player of the week, continued his scorching hot start to the season, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the 2015-16 campaign.

Lindblom was the only other Yellowjacket who finished in double figures, scoring 15 points on 7-15 shooting.

UMD was led by Junior Coleman, who finished with 19 points off the bench. Pierre Newton added 16 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs. Taylor Lavery finished with 13 points, while Cody Tomlinson and Jake Wilson each chipped in 10.

The Yellowjackets shot 39.3% from the field in this matchup, going 6-12 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting only 9-22 from the free throw line.

UMD shot 51.6% from the field, going 13-24 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 12-14 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with seven turnovers. The Bulldogs finished with 13.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (7-6, 4-1 UMAC) is a home matchup against bridge-rival St. Scholastica on Saturday, January 9. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 3:00 p.m.
