Yellowjackets Fall to Saints in the Border Battle

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Saturday afternoon to take on border-rival St. Scholastica. This game was also billed as the UMAC game of the week, as both teams came into the game tied for second in conference with four wins each.

Shooting woes plagued the Yellowjackets in this matchup, as they fell to the Saints 67-55 to drop round one of the border-battle.

This game started out about as slowly as a basketball game can start, with St. Scholastica holding a 3-2 edge just over six minutes into the game. A pair of Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) free throws tied the game up at 5-5, but the Saints retook the lead on the next possession.

Both teams were struggling to put the ball in the hoop in this one, but the Saints spent most of the first quarter doing it slightly better than the Yellowjackets as they held a 17-13 lead with 3:18 remaining in the first half. The Yellowjackets managed to find their shooting touch to end the half, going on an 11-1 run, capped by a Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) 3-pointer, to end the half.

The shooting struggles continued in the second half for the Yellowjackets, as they only hit two shots in the first four minutes to fall behind the Saints 30-28. St. Scholastica never trailed from that point, as the closest the Yellowjackets were able to get the rest of the way was a 50-47 deficit with 3:39 remaining in the game.

Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) led the Yellowjackets in this one, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year. Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures, finishing with 15 points and seven rebounds to go along with a team leading three assists.

Julius Johnson was the only Saint in double figures, finishing with a game high 21 points to go along with six rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 33.9% from the field, going 2-13 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 15-22 from the free throw line.

St. Scholastica shot 47.9% from the field, going 5-13 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 16-24 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 10 turnovers. The Saints finished with 13.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (7-7, 4-2 UMAC) is a road trip Friday, January 15 to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on North Central University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
