Yellowjackets knock off UW-Stout on the road for first time since 2008 in history-making match

The University of Wisconsin Superior knocked off the University of Wisconsin-Stout on the road for the first time since 2008, earning a historic 200th victory for head coach Lynne Deadrick, as the Yellowjackets defeated the Blue Devils in five sets in Menomonie on Monday night.

UW-Superior (7-16) fell in the opening set 25-20 but hit .344 in the second set and rolled that momentum to 25-17 and 25-19. While UW-Stout (10-10) forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-21 win in game four, but the Blue Devils hit just .031 in the clincher as the Yellowjackets took it 16-14. Stout had the advantage in attacking percentage, hitting .152 compared to .129 for UWS. Sophomore setter Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) spread the attack around to three different attackers with at 12 kills on the night. Senior right-side hitter Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti H.S.) led the way with 16 kills, while junior Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) had 14 and freshman Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji H.S.) had 12.

The Yellowjackets dug themselves out of many tough attacks with six players reaching double digit defensive saves on the day. VerWay had 21 digs to go with 41 assists. Junior Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna H.S.) had 25 to lead UW-Superior, while sophomore Kaila Meyer (Brownsdale, Minn./Hayfield H.S.) had 24. Colligan rounded out her double-double with 11. The Yellowjackets also had eight blocks, compared to seven for the Blue Devils. Anna Panning had a game-high 33 digs for UW-Stout while Jessica Duval had a game-high 54 assists. Ashley Pratt matched Landherr with 16 kills for the Devils.

UWS last defeated UW-Stout three seasons ago on Oct. 2, 2013 in Superior. Their last series victory on the road came on Oct. 8, 2008.

The Yellowjackets return home on Friday as they play host the College of St. Benedict in non-conference action. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
