Yellowjackets can't slow Saint Benedict in Friday night fight

The University of Wisconsin Superior could not slow the Blazers of the College of Saint Benedict as the Yellowjackets fell in straight sets in non-conference action at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Friday night.

The too-tall Blazers matched up well against the front line for UW-Superior (7-17), forcing the Yellowjackets to hit just .097 for the match. Each team collected six blocks on the evening, but St. Benedict (10-9) had 47 kills while holding UWS to just 29. The Blazers hit .282, rolling to victories of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-21. The Yellowjackets had their strongest performance of the night in game three, but could not sustain their offense as the two teams went back-and-forth. An early five-point run for Saint Benedict proved to be the different.

Freshman Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji H.S.) and senior Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti H.S.) tied for the team-high with eight kills each. Liz Schultz and Megan Koop each went over double digits for the Blazers with 13 and 11, respectively. Junior libero Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna H.S.) had 16 digs for the Yellowjackets, narrowly edged for the game-high by CSB's Ashley Trustheim. Sophomore setter Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) had yet another double-double to add to her resume this season with 24 assists and 10 digs. She also had an ace and played a role in two blocks on the day. Landherr, Schultz, and Koop each had three blocks on the night for their respective teams.
