In the second attempt at the teams' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match-up after lightning and darkness postponed the game earlier this season, the University of Wisconsin Superior and the College of St. Scholastica battled in a rough, back-and-forth match-up fitting for the rivalry. The 3-1 victory for the Saints at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex on Tuesday afternoon featured 45 foul calls and nine yellow cards.
UW-Superior (5-7-0, 4-1-0 UMAC) out-shot St. Scholastica 18-11 for the game, but CSS (7-5-0, 6-0-0 UMAC) leand on its top scorers to edge out the Yellowjackets at their home field. Kyle Farrer netted his seventh score of the season for the Saints, heading in a Luke Buckton corner kick at the 10:22 mark of the game. Buckton would score 15 minutes later, his first of two on the afternoon, by driving a ball up the center of the field, collecting his own pass and kicking a ball to the far right corner past a diving goalkeeper to put the Saints up 2-0. They would hold that score through the half as goalkeeper Corrado Rosato made four saves against UWS in the first frame.
The Yellowjackets got on the board quickly in the second half with junior forward
Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) corraling a CSS pass that deflected off a St. Scholastica defender and burying it for an unassisted score just 1:55 after the break. Buckton would push the Saints ahead by two once again just five minutes later, collecting a through-ball from Jonny Harkin for his seventh of the season. Rosato finished with seven saves for CSS, while senior
Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) had five saves for UW-Superior. Senior midfielder
Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos H.S.) had a game-high five shots.
