The University of Wisconsin Superior put on arguably its best all-around effort of the season on the offensive and defensive ends for its home finale, but Northland College snuck a late unassisted score past the Yellowjacket defense to edge out a 1-0 victory in non-conference action at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex in Superior, Wisconsin.
UW-Superior (1-13-0) has matched up well against Northland (9-4-1) this season, but unfortunately has not come away with a victory as the LumberJills knocked off the Yellowjackets 1-0 in each of their two meetings during 2016. While Northland out-shot UWS 21-6 overall for the match, the two teams were nearly identical in the first half as the 'Jills had just a 4-3 edge in shots-on-goal after the opening 45 minutes.
Junior goalkeeper
Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul H.S.) made 11 saves to keep the Yellowjackets alive in the contest, though her defense stepped up to prevent Northland from getting many good looks at the net. Madeleine Weiland got a lucky bounce in the 84th minute for the LumberJills as her crossing pass found its way into the net for her 12th score of the season. UW-Superior finished with five shots on goal, including three by sophomore midfielder
Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island H.S.). Sophomore midfielder
Kelli Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg H.S.) also added a shot on target while playing stout on the defensive end for the 'Jackets.
