Forward
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold H.S.) continues to be a difference maker for the University of Wisconsin Superior as the first-year Yellowjacket netted the game-winning score in overtime to give UWS a 3-2 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory over the University of Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Yellowjackets was cruising towards a victory for the first 80 percent of the match-up, but momentum changed in favor of the Eagles in the 81st minute as Northwestern (7-8-1, 4-3-0 UMAC) scored two goals just 2:08 apart to draw even with UW-Superior (9-7-0, 6-1-0 UMAC) and eventually force the match into extra time. Chris Cleope did the honors of scoring both goals for UNW, first with an assist from Matthew McCann at the 80:42 mark of the match-up, and then just moments later on a penalty kick attempt with 7:10 remaining in regulation.
The two teams would need nearly all of two overtime sessions before Watson scored the winner with just 2:28 remaining in double overtime, thanks to an assist from
Gunnar O'Neill-Sengbush (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School). The match was all about the offense as the Yellowjackets out-shot the Eagles 24-16 in the match, and 16-11 on-goal. UW-Superior controlled the flow in overtime though, out-shooting Northwestern 4-0. Junior forward
Hugo Roos (Halmstad, Sweden/Aspero Idrottsgymnasium) got the scoring started for the Yellowjackets on the day with his first of the day at the 16:58 mark thanks to an assist from senior midfielder
Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos H.S.). Senior
Ryan Linsmayer (Dresser, Wis./Osceola) added his third of the season to give UWS the 2-0 lead at 33:59.
