UW-Superior shuts out St. Scholastica in border rematch

For the second-straight game this weekend, the University of Wisconsin Superior posted a two-goal lead in the first half on Sunday afternoon, but the Yellowjackets saved the drama of Saturday's overtime victory against the College of St. Scholastica as they rolled to a shutout victory, defeating their bridge rival 2-0 at Saints Field in Duluth, Minnesota.

The victory evened the season series at one win apiece between UW-Superior (10-7) and the Saints, after St. Scholastica (9-7) had knocked off the Yellowjackets during conference play earlier this season. As the top two teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference standings (CSS wrapped up the conference title on Saturday), they each will hope to meet again by advancing to the tournament finals when UMAC postseason play begins next week.

Senior midfielder Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos H.S.) got the scoring started for UWS with his fifth of the season in the seventh minute, courtesy of an assist from junior forward Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.). Bucklew added to the Yellowjacket lead with his tenth of the season, scoring off an assist by junior defender Hugo Roos (Halmstad, Sweden/Aspero Idrottsgymnasium) at the 29:26 mark of the match. The defense held the rest of the way for UW-Superior, pitching a shutout as senior Ben Wihlem made six saves for the Yellowjackets. UWS out-shot St. Scholastica 11-8 overall in the match and 7-6 on-goal.
