The University of Wisconsin Superior continued to put up eye-popping numbers as the Yellowjackets exploded for 10 goals in a 10-3 victory over Finlandia University on Saturday night at Wessman Arena in Superior.
UW-Superior (2-0-0) totalled 19 goals on the weekend with senior
Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) accounting for six of them as he tallied his second hat trick of the weekend against Finlandia (0-2-0). The Yellowjackets reached the ten-goal plateau for the first time since UWS defeated Saint Mary's 10-3 on November 1, 2008.
The Yellowjackets were nothing if not efficient in the first period, taking an early two-goal lead on their first three shots, as seniors
Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) and
Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas H.S.) and junior
Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor H.S.) accounted for UW-Superior's first six points of the contest. Shand got the scoring started, ripping his first goal of the year from the point on the powerplay with assists from Ecklund and Svensson just past five minutes into the game. Svensson followed that up with his second of the year moments later, ripping a puck from the corner to back-door Finlandia sophomore goalie Matt Young on a one-time pass set up by Shand and Ecklund.
The Lions cut the lead in half when sophomore Max Seiter ripped a shot from the point that seemed to be stopped by goalie
Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane H.S.) but eventually tricked between his pads and through for the score. Finlandia out-shot UWS by a 10-7 margin in the opening frame.
Senior forward
Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) joined the fray, getting on the board with a goal and an assist as the Yellowjackets extended their lead out to 4-1 in the second period. Ecklund tallied his first goal of the year with a toe-drag score just 1:20 into the period, getting assists from Svensson and Neduzak, and successfully chasing Young in favor of junior goaltender Alec Rounds for the Lions. Neduzak made good on a series of openlooks, scoring his fourth of the year on a breakaway and putting the Jackets up by three with 1:55 remaining in the period thanks to an outlet pass by Svensson. Finlandia would cut into the lead before the end of the period as senior defender Andrew Martin ripped a slapshot that found the back of the net with just 40 ticks remaining on the clock. He got assists from a pair of freshmen, Matt Mayi and Daniel Sarnecki.
The Yellowjackets piled it on in the third period, extending their lead out to 9-2 and eventually 10-3 with that final tally coming with just 36 seconds remaining in the game. Freshman
Jerry Miettunen (Tuusula, Finland/Makelanrinne Spoerts H.S.) netted the second goal of his weekend 6:45 into the final frame, getting an assist from Svensson and fellow rookie
Ethan James (Duchess, Alta./Duchess H.S.). Ecklund added his second of the night just before the midpoint of the period with 10:24 remaining in the game, getting an assist from Shand. Neduzak tacked on his second of the day at the 11:43 mark of the period with assists from freshman
Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) and Shand. Sophomore
Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden/Wenströmska Gymnasium) got on the board for the first time this weekend, tipping a Mietunnen slap shot in front of the net with Neduzak also getting credit for an assist.
Sophomore
Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) got on the board at the 15:31 mark of the period with his second off the weekend. He got assists from Birzitis and Shand. After Finlandia shaved a bit off the Yellowjacket lead as Sarnecki got on the board with an assist from Matyi, the Yellowjackets would get one last powerplay chance in the final seconds and Neduzak would make them pay, earning his second straight hat trick with just 36 ticks remaining, getting assists from Kosman and Shand.
The Yellowjackets finished 5-for-9 on the powerplay while Finlandia finished 0-for-4. After being out-shot in the first period, the Yellowjackets finished with a 34-25 advantage in shots. Junior
Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane H.S.) improved to 2-0-0 on the year, making 22 saves for UWS. The duo of Young and Rounds combined for 24 saves.
