Yellowjackets meet their offensive match in no. 14 Augsburg despite Dedenbach's hat trick

After scoring 19 combined goals on its two-game opening weekend, the University of Wisconsin Superior met its match on offense as Augsburg College rolled to an 8-4 victory on Tuesday night in Minneapolis despite a third-straight three-goal effort by a Yellowjacket. UW-Superior (2-1-0, R.V.) suffered its first defeat in non-conference play as no. 14 Augsburg (2-0-1) flexed its offensive muscles, scoring in every period.

Sophomore Jared Dedenbach (Warren, Mich./Fargo South H.S.) got the scoring started with his first of three goals (3) on the night, putting the Yellowjackets up just 2:18 into the game with an assist by freshman linemate Liam Blais (Uxbridge, Ont./Uxbridge Secondary). The Auggies jumped out to a 2-1 lead scoring the next two tallies at the 8:50 and 11:08 marks, each on even-strength. Sophomore forward Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) drew UWS even with his third of the season just 27 seconds later, assisted by freshman Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) and sophomore Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden/Wenströmska Gymnasium). Augsburg would go back on top with 1:08 left in the period as Nate Flynn scored on the powerplay.

The Auggies built on their lead early in the second period as Evan Hesse scored a short-handed, unassisted goal just 2:29 into the period. Dedenbach would inch the Yellowjackets back into it with his second of the day on the powerplay, getting an assist from freshman Jerry Miettunen (Tuusula, Finland/Makelanrinne Spoerts H.S.) and senior Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) at the 4:05 mark of the second. Augsburg again added two more quick scores, with Drew Anderson scoring on the powerplay at 9:14 and Andy Faust scoring just 38 seconds later to extend the lead. The Auggies pushed their lead to 7-3 as Eli May netted his first of the year at the with 6:59 remaining in the period.

The two teams went quiet for nearly the length of the period before Dedenbach got on the board for a third time, tipping in a shot from Mietunnen to pull UW-Superior back within three. Senior Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) had the first assist on the play. The Yellowjackets would get no closer on the night as Augsburg tacked on the team's third powerplay goal at 14:27 of the third, this time from Rory Vesel.

Junior Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone H.S.) started in net for UWS, allowing a pair of scores while stopping 14 chances in the first 30:09 while junior Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane H.S.) made 11 stops while giving up six scores. Jordyn Kaufer went the distance for the Auggies, making 28 saves while giving up four. Augsburg out-shot the Yellowjackets just 33-32 on the day. UW-Superior finished 2-for-6 on the powerplay while the Auggies were 3-for-8.
