A quiet third period offensively barely told the story as the University of Wisconsin Superior fell 4-3 in its home opener against Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.
All seven goals were scored in the first 36 minutes of the game as UW-Superior fell to 0-2-0 on its opening weekend while Augsburg rebounded to 1-1-0 in a pair of road games in the Twin Ports. Junior forward
Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover H.S.) had two of the Yellowjackets' three scores on the day, including bringing UWS back within one with the final goal of the game. The two teams combined for just 12 shots in the third period after Augsburg led 21-19 in the going into the second intermission.
The Auggies' Bridget Wagner got the scoring started with an unassisted tally just 5:27 into the match-up, and Augsburg tacked on to its lead just over five minutes later when Callen Naasz scored at 10:45 of the period with an assist from Darby Lindgren. The scoring was not done there in a hard-hitting first period as rookie Yellowjacket
Hannah Currin (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy H.S.) netted the second goal of her career with an assist from junior
Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm H.S.) at 12:45 in the first. Goodin got on the board for the first time this season just four minutes later, getting an assist from freshman
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Dodge County H.S.).
The two teams went to the locker room for the first intermission knotted at 2-2. Augsburg came out swinging once again, getting a score from Megan Robertson 6:02 into the second stanza with assists from Nikki Nightengale and Ashley Kloncz. The Auggies would extend their lead back to two goals when Mackenzie Molnar scored just past the midpoint of the period at 12:37, getting an assist from Jacie Hoehn. Goodin scored her second of the day, getting another assist from Shelton as well as sophomore Sam Westgard.
Each team finished 0-for-2 on the powerplay. Sophomore
Natasha Singer (Kimberley, B.C./Warner H.S.) made 21 saves while suffering a defeat in her first start of hte season for the Yellowjackets, while Leah Patrick had 24 stops in a victory for Augsburg. In all, UWS out-shot the Auggies 27-25 on the day.
