Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Joe Hansen

UW-Superior scores one early and one late to eke out a victory over defensive Augsburg

The University of Wisconsin Superior scored once in this first half and a second time in the final two minutes as the Yellowjackets edged out Augsburg College 2-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex.

Augsburg (3-7-1) seemed content to play a defensive style throughout the match-up, collecting just four shots and three on-target in the game, only turning up the intensity in the final minutes. UW-Superior (4-6-0), on the other hand, peppered the Auggies' Clark Page with 15 shots, eight on-net to pick up the victory.

The Yellowjackets' pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference weekly award winners hooked up for the first score of the game, as senior defender James Menzies (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) touched a pass to the front of the net for freshman forward Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold H.S.), who buried it to the top left corner of the goal at the 27:56 mark of the first half for his fifth of the season. Augsburg's defensive-minded game plan frustrated UWS throughout much of the game, keeping them to the outside, but senior goalkeeper Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) pitched a shutout, making three saves along the way. As the Auggies turned up their intensity, it gave the Yellowjackets another late opportunity on offense where senior midfielder Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) touched a ball forward to Watson, who played it up in turn to senior midfielder Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos H.S.), who buried his second score of the season working around just one defender for an open look with just 1:59 remaining on the scoreboard.

Rodriguez has a game-high five shots including two on-goal. Four different players had one shot for Augsburg.
