St. Benedict steals UW-Superior's home opener on Tuesday night

The University of Wisconsin Superior jumped out to a first-quarter lead but the College of St. Benedict stormed back in the middle periods to knock off the Yellowjackets by one point - 54-53 on Tuesday night in both teams' seasn opener at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Trailing 15-6 after the first quarter, St. Ben's (1-0) out-scored UW-Superior (0-1) 32-23 across the second and third periods and then held on for a one-point victory by out-scoring the Yellowjackets 16-15 in the final frame. The Yellowjackets put the ball in the hands of freshman Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) who knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer but could not draw the foul necessary to draw even as they trailed 54-50 when the ball left her hand. Reinertsen led UWS in her college debut, scoring 12 points on the night.

The two teams combined for just 54 rebounds on the night as they shot a combined 39-for-86 on the day, with the Yellowjackets actually having the edge shooting 46.3 percent for the game. The Blazers hit six three-pointers while holding UWS to just 4-of-11 beyond the arc. The 'Jackets were just 11-of-17 from the free throw line.

Three different players reached double figures for St. Benedict led by Chelsey Gutter who scored 11 to go with a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover H.S.) also added nine points on the night for UW-Superior. Six Yellowjackets had at least five points on the night.

UW-Superior will be on the road this Friday night as the Yellowjackets take on Augsburg College. Opening tip is set for 5:00 p.m. in Minneapolis.
