Augsburg comeback spoils Yellowjackets' night in Minneapolis

The University of Wisconsin Superior fell victim to a comeback effort by Augsburg College as the Auggies knocked off the Yellowjackets 86-84 in Minneapolis on Friday evening.

UW-Superior (0-2) jumped out to an early first quarter lead, turning over the the home team four times in the first five minutes and six times overall in the opening period, building a 28-10 lead in the process. UWS shot 64.3 peorcent in the first frame while Augsburg (2-0) was held to just 3-for-16 (18.8 percent). The Auggies cut into the lead in the second quarter, shooting 50 percent on their next 16 shots while the Yellowjackets came back to earth a bit, finishing the first half shooting 15-for-32. Augsburg outscored UW-Superior 20-13 in the quarter, cutting its halftime deficit down to just nine at 41-32. Junior guard Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) contributed 15 points in the first half, hitting 5-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the line. As a team, the Yellowjackets were perfect from the free throw line in eight chances before heading to the locker room.

After a relatively even third quarter that saw UWS extend its lead with a 21-20 edge in scoring, the final frame was all Augsburg as the home team charged back to take a three-point lead in the final two minutes at 82-79. After trading a lay-up by Kontny and a pair of Auggie free throws, rookie guard Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) knocked down a game-tying three-pointer with just seven seconds remaining. Augsburg's Hannah Steinhaus had the answer on the other end, laying-in the go-ahead score with one second left. The Yellowjackets were unable to get off a shot before the final buzzer.

UW-Superior finished the game shooting 32-for-64 (50.0 percent) while Augsburg came back from a dismal first quarter to finish 32-for-69 (46.4). As a team, the Yellowjackets had 44 rebounds to 30 for the Auggies. Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield H.S.) had 10 rebounds on the back end of a double-double. Kontny finished with 23 points, while Norlin added 21 and Reinertsen 14, crossing double digits for the second time in as many games to start her career. Tamira McLemore had 23 points to lead Augsburg.

UW-Superior will return home Sunday as the team plays host to Concordia College of Minnesota. The Yellowjackets and Cobbers will tip off at 5:00 p.m.
