The University of Wisconsin Superior broke through with its first victory of the season, getting defensive to knock off Concordia College of Minnesota 59-47 at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Sunday evening.
UW-Superior (1-2) held the Cobbers to just seven points on 1-of-9 shooting in a 14-7 opening quarter. Concordia (1-2) would improve from there on the night but finished shooting just 32.6 percent for the game, including 5-of-18 from three-point range. The Yellowjackets were not any better in percentage, shooting 31.6 percent on the day but turned the ball over just 11 times compared to 24 for the Cobbers.
Concordia would trim the lead down to just five with a lay-up from Greta Walsh at the 3:19 mark of the fourth quarter but get no closer as the Yellowjackets were able to hit 11-of-14 free throws in the final stretch and 21-of-29 on the day to hold off the Cobbers.

Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) had 20 points on the day to lead UW-Superior, while sophomore forward
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield H.S.) also surpassed double digits with 10 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Kontny made 10 of her 20 points at the free throw line, going 10-of-11 from the stripe, and also had a team-best three steals on the day.. Walsh had a team-high 18 points for the Cobbers while Crystal Amundson grabbed six boards to pace Concordia.

UW-Superior will return to the court in nine nights as the team takes a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to Mortorelli Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to take on in-state rival the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Opening tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
