The University of Wisconsin Superior opened its 2016-17 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with a victory, knocking off the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire 3-1 on Friday night on the road in Eau Claire.
The Yellowjackets got a score in the first and another in the third from junior forward
Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover H.S.) (7) and a pair of assists from senior forward
Amanda Coey (Brandon, Man./Crocus Plains H.S.) as UW-Superior (RV, 4-3-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on despite a late score by UW-Eau Claire (4-3-0).
Goodin got the scoring started just 3:32 into the game, with an assist from Coey and senior forward
Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.). That score would hold up through the next two intermissions, but just over 40 minutes of gameplay later, junior forward
Jessica Marsalla (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing H.S.) netted her first of the year, getting assists from sophomore
Mandy Tomlinson (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca H.S.) and junior
Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) at 4:15 in the third period. Goodin and Coey hooked up for another score, this time on the powerplay, at 7:30 of the third to push the lead out to 3-0. Lauren Norgren scored a goal for the Blugold with 9:05 remaining, and despite pulling the goalie for the final 1:49 of regulation, UW-Eau Claire would not get any closer on the night.
Erin Conolly made 14 stops for the Blugolds in her 58+ minutes between the pipes. Senior
Kim Kobar (The Pas, Man./Margaret Barbour Collegiate) made 27 stops for the Yellowjackets. UW-Superior finished 1-for-4 with the skater-advantage while UW-Eau Claire was 0-for-6.
