Junior forward
Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm H.S.) scored with just three minutes remaining, and the University of Wisconsin Superior held on despite a late 5-on-3 chance for the ninth-ranked University of St. Thomas as the Yellowjackets knocked off the Tommies 2-1 at Wessman Arena on Tuesday night.
UW-Superior (RV, 3-3-0) was called for back-to-back penalties at 18:35 of the third, giving No. 9 St. Thomas (0-3-0) the final 85 seconds with a two-skater advantage. The Tommies would later pull their goalie to make it 6-on-3 but the Yellowjackets held on thanks in large part to stout goaltending from senior netminder
Kim Kobar (The Pas, Man./Margaret Barbour Collegiate), who made 37 saves on the night.
After a disciplined first period for both teams, St. Thomas took the lead just 1:01 into the second period, with Becca Zarembenski scoring thanks to an assist from Leah Schwartzman. Zarembenski would set in motion the Yellowjackets' first score of the night as she went off for roughing at 15:59 of the second, but was following just 16 seconds later by a penalty to junior defender
Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy). During the 4-on-4 period, junior forward
Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover H.S.) banged home a rebound to tie the game at 17:03 of the second. Junior defenders
Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River H.S.) and
Abby Constant-Bercier (The Pas, Man.) each were credited with an assist on the play.
After a wild second period, the two teams skated to a draw through the opening 17 minutes of the third period, but Weiss netted the go-ahead score at 17:02 with an assist from freshman forward
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island H.S.) to put UWS up. From there, Kobar stood her ground and the Yellowjackets did enough to hang on for the victory.Â
UW-Superior finished 0-for-3 on the powerplay while holding St. Thomas to an 0-for-4 night. Mackenzie Torpy finished with 26 stops for the Tommies before being pulled for an extra skater for the final 50 seconds.
