Yellowjackets end season's first half on a winning note against Martin Luther

The University of Wisconsin Superior trailed early, but the Yellowjackets eventually rolled it a 20-point victory, knocking off Upper Midwest Athletic Conference rival Martin Luther College 93-73 on Saturday evening in New Ulm, Minnesota.

UW-Superior (2-10, 1-4 UMAC) allowed the first six points of the game and would trail by as much as seven points at 15-8 with 5:45 away in the first half before opening a ten-point run kick-started by back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard Christian Sellers (Ontario, Calif./Colony H.S.) and junior Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls H.S.). The duo would do the same to extend that streak to 16-of-18 points. The Yellowjackets would extend the lead out to 11 in the first half, but Martin Luther knocked down a late three of its own to pull within seven heading to the locker room.

UWS opened the second half with nine-straight points, pulling away from the Knights. The team never looked back, leading by as many as 28 in the most one-sided game of the season for the Yellowjackets. Freshman forward Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Kalien added 14 points including 4-of-8 from three-point range. Sellers had 13 points off the bench, while sophomore guard Trevor Oswald (Isle, Minn./Isle H.S.) also added double digits with 10 points off the bench. UW-Superior shot 52.0 percent (39-of-75) for the game including 41.7 percent from three-point range knocking down eight three's in the first half. T.J. Babinec had a team-high 20 points ofr Martin Luther, while the Knights hit 43.3 percent on the night (26-of-60).

The Yellowjackets will take the next 12 nights off for the holidays before returning to the court on Friday, December 30 on the road. UW-Superior will take on Bethel University in Arden HIlls, Minnesota. Opening tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
