Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Joe Hansen

Yellowjackets douse the Inferno for eighth-straight win

The Thursday matinee rarely finds its way onto the schedule for women's college basketball teams, but the University of Wisconsin Superior made good on the opportunity as the Yellowjackets rolled over in-state rival Alverno College 85-56 in non-conference action at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

UW-Superior (9-3) used double-double efforts from a pair of juniors to douse the Inferno as it made the trip up from Milwaukee. Alverno (2-7) got 15 points from Gabby Hood but shot 38.6 percent for the game as a team, trailing by a score of 47-26 at halftime after hitting just 10-of-29 in the first half.

Junior guard Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) had a game-high 17 points and ten rebounds, while junior forward Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon H.S.) grabbed 10 boards to go with 10 points. Sophomore forward Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield H.S.) added 16 points in the Yellowjacket victory. UW-Superior knocked down 46.1 percent for the game, hitting four first-half three-pointers to build a lead and never looked back. Alverno was able to cut the lead to 31-24 with 5:44 remaining in the first, but the Yellowjackets ran off 16 of the next 18 points to put the game on ice.

Head coach Don Mulhern emptied his bench in the victory, getting at least a point from 14 different players while 17 found their name on the scoresheet. UW-Superior never trailed and scored 27 points off 22 Alverno turnovers. The Yellowjackets grabbed 19 rebounds on the offensive end, scoring 20 second-chance points for the game.
