Comeback attempt falls just short as St. Kate's snaps UW-Superior's win streak

After a turnover-plagued first half saw the University of Wisconsin Superior trail 40-19 after 20 minutes, the Yellowjackets came all the way back to gain a lead late in the second half, but eventually, St. Catherine University snapped the home team's winning streak at eight games with a 61-58 victory over UWS  at Mortorelli Gymnasium on Friday night.

UW-Superior (9-4) had 16 first-half turnovers, shooting just 30.43 percent in the opening frame as they trailed by as many as 22 points late in the second quarter before coming back to lead 57-56 with 2:56 remaining in the game. St. Kate's (8-3) held the Yellowjackets without a basket the rest of the way as UWS cashed in one free throw attempt in the final minutes while a pair of lay-ups helped the Wildcats claim the victory.

The Yellowjackets opened the second half with a 14-2 run to pull within 12 points. St. Catherine scored six-straight points but junior forward Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon H.S.) would spring another UW-Superior run as they added a 15-4 run with just one made basket for the Wildcats. Bartunek finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds with all the points and 10 of those rebounds coming after halftime.

Junior guard Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) added 18 points for the second-straight night for the Yellowjackets. Three players topped 20 points for St. Catherine. Kennedy Jennings led all scorers with 20 points, while LaShay Holt had 15 points and 10 boards for the Wildcats. St. Catherine finished shooting 39.0 percent for the game after hitting just 7-of-30 (23.3 percent) in the second half after knocking down 55.2 percent in the opening half. UW-Superior knocked down 13-of-26 in the in the second half to finish the game shooting 40.8 percent.

The Yellowjackets will be in exhibition action Tuesday as they travel across the bridge to take on the University of Minnesota Duluth on the road. The game will be the Bulldogs' Education Day with opening tip set for 11:00 a.m.
