The University of Wisconsin Superior continued its weekend Upper Midwest Athletic Conference road trip through the Twin Cities as the Yellowjackets fell by an 84-61 final against North Central University on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis.
The Rams jumped out to an early lead on UW-Superior (1-6, 0-2 UMAC), hitting a pair of threes in the early going to jump out to a 14-5 lead just 3:49 into the first half. North Central (24, 1-1 UMAC) would extend its lead out to as many as 14 at 39-25 with 3:27 to go in the opening frame. The Yellowjackets did themselves little favor in the first 20 minutes, turning over the ball seven times while shooting 35.5 percent on 11-of-31 from the floor while the Rams shot 48.5 percent on 16-of-33. NCU knocked down five threes in the first half, but the Yellowjackets trimmed the halftime deficit down to just seven at 39-32 by making good at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-9 chances compared to just 2-of-7 for North Central.
The Rams came out of the blocks firing in the second half, building on their lead with an eventual 45-29 edge after the break. North Central maintained its shooting prowess, hitting 47.7 percent for the game, including 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from three-point range. The Rams improved at the line, hitting 11-of-16 in the second half while UWS finished just 11-of-17 from the line. The Yellowjackets shot 39.7 percent for the game, adding just 4-of-21 from beyond the arc, and turned the ball over 13 times compared to just seven by North Central.
Junior guard
Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds for UW-Superior.
Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.) also hit double figures with 12 for the Yellowjackets. North Central had three starters hit double figures, led by Travis Vogit who had 23 points. Joel Cline had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Rams.
