No. 4 Stevens Point stymies Yellowjacket offense on 'Ugly Sweater' night

The University of Wisconsin Superior battled 'ugly' against the top dogs in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday night, but the fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point spoiled the Yellowjackets' "Ugly Sweater" celebration with a 4-0 defeat  of the home team at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets and Pointers played even through the first 33 minutes of action before the offense of No. 4 UW-Stevens Point (8-2-1, 2-0-0 WIAC) took control. Jacob Barber netted the first score of the game at 13:38 of the second, getting an assist from Lawrence Cornellier. UW-Superior (4-8-0, 0-2-0 WIAC) gave up a penalty just nine seconds later, and the Pointers made good on the powerplay opportunity as Ryan Bittner ripped a shot from the point at 15:17, getting an assist from Trace Strahle.

After being out-shot 15-3 in the first period, the Yellowjackets had 19 through the final two period compared to 22 for Stevens Point. Senior defender Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas H.S.) led UWS with five chances. No. 4 UWSP added to its lead at 2:03 of the third with a second even-strength score on the day, this time by Eliot Grauer with an assist from Ethan Strong. The Pointer powerplay unit would finish 2-for-7 on the day, adding a second score with the man advantage at 12:30 of the third as Jono Davis scored assisted by Barber and Karty. UWS finished 0-for-4 with the skater advantage.

Junior goaltender Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone H.S.) made 33 saves for the Yellowjackets. Max Milosek stopped all 22 shots that he faced for Stevens Point.
