Yellowjackets tripped up in Overtime

Box Score

St. Scholastica 116, Yellowjackets 105 (OT)

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Saturday, as they traveled over the bridge to Duluth, Minn. to take on rival St. Scholastica. The game marked the second time the Yellowjackets and Saints have played thus far this season, with the Saints taking game one by a score of 67-55.

The Yellowjackets ran out of steam in this one, after a late St. Scholastica comeback pushed the game into overtime, as they fell on the road to the Saints 116-105 in overtime.

The Yellowjackets came out strong in this matchup, as Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) opened the game with five straight points. With the early lead in hand, the Yellowjackets were looking to put the Saints away quickly. This looked like it might come to fruition as the Yellowjackets took a 36-26 lead on a Schradle dunk with 5:29 remaining in the half. Chris Tyler (Bowral, Australia/Chevalier College) pushed the Yellowjacket lead to 41-28 with a 3-pointer just over a minute later, as the Yellowjackets were cruising. The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the half, as the Yellowjackets went into the break with a 51-39 lead.

The first five minutes of the second half saw the Yellowjacket lead start to balloon, as a Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) jumper with 14:47 left in the second half pushed the lead to 69-49. It was at this point everything started to unravel for the Yellowjackets. The Saints went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:58 to cut the Yellowjacket lead down to 69-56. The Following four minutes saw the Yellowjackets get outscored 16-6, as their once formidable lead was cut down to three points, at 75-72 with 8:02 remaining in the half.

The Yellowjackets tried to regroup, and it looked as though they may have. A pair of Taylor Mattison (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake-Willow River) free throws with 3:36 remaining pushed the Yellowjacket lead up to 88-79 with 3:36 remaining and it appeared as though the earlier loss would be avenged. The Yellowjackets saw the lead evaporate at the end of the game, as they missed three free throws over the final 1:44 to allow the Saints to tie up the game at 95-95 on a 3-pointer with 0:22 left. The Yellowjackets had the last possession of regulation, but a Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) 3-pointer was off the mark as these two teams went into overtime.

The overtime saw the Saints take their first lead of the game with 4:52 remaining, and they never looked back from there. The Yellowjackets went on a two minute stretch, beginning with 2:51 remaining in the overtime, where they failed to score a point. The Saints took advantage of this inopportune cold stretch to complete the comeback and defeat the Yellowjackets to sweep the border-battle.

Schradle led the Yellowjackets in this matchup, finishing with a career high 36 points. Schradle also finished with seven assists, which establishes and new career high, and four rebounds.

Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds to finish with his fourth double-double of the season. Kalien chipped in 12 for the Yellowjackets.

The Saints were led by Jake naslund, who finished with 27 points, six rebounds, and four steals off the bench. Joe Stark added 22 points, while Julius Johnson finished with 17.

The Yellowjackets shot 49.2% from the field, going 9-22 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 34-42 from the free throw line.

St. Scholastica shot 49.3% from the field, going 8-19 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 38-49 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 13 turnovers. The Saints finished with 10.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (11-12, 7-7 UMAC) is a home matchup against Northwestern Friday, February 19. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
