Schradle’s Triple-Double Guides Yellowjackets to Playoff Birth

Box Score

Yellowjackets 94, Northwestern 86

The Yellowjacket men entered this weekend in must-win territory. While they were ranked fifth in the UMAC coming into the game, which is a playoff spot, the Yellowjackets could not rest easy. This is because, if they did not take at least one game over the weekend, they would be watching the playoffs from home.

Thankfully that was not the case, as the Yellowjackets defeated the Eagles 94-86 to avenge a loss to earlier in the season.

The Yellowjackets found themselves in an early hole in this matchup, as Northwestern opened the game on an 8-2 run. This did not deter the Yellowjackets, as they fought back to erase the deficit, and take a lead of their own at 14-13 on a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) layup with 13:32 remaining in the first half.

The game then became a back-and-forth affair from that point, with the Yellowjackets finally able to create some separation from the Eagles. Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) scored four straight points for the Yellowjackets to push their lead to 35-29 with 4:07 remaining in the half. The Yellowjacket lead then grew to eight with 2:27 remaining on a Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) 3-pointer, one of three that Lindblom would make in the game. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, the Yellowjackets found themselves leading 44-36.

The second half did not start out the way the Yellowjackets envisioned. Northwestern came out strong, and managed to retake the lead at 48-47 with 16:42 remaining. The game then reentered its back-and-forth style, with neither team gaining an edge. That changed at the 8:05 mark, when Lindblom hit a 3-pointer that put the Yellowjackets up 68-65. The Yellowjackets would not relinquish the lead from that point on, as they defeated Northwestern to clinch a playoff spot.

This game belonged to Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton). Schradle finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists to finish with his first career triple-double. Schradle also passed the 1,000 point mark in his career in the game, as he now sits at 1,009.

Lindblom was no slouch himself, as he finished with 29 points to create a significant one-two punch for the Yellowjackets. Milenkovic and Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) each chipped in 15.

Northwestern was led by Michael Carney, who finished with 28 points on a scorching 11-16 shooting. Kyle Ooms added 16 points for the Eagles, while Cody Sprenger chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 54.2% from the field, going 8-16 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 22-27 from the free throw line.

Northwestern shot 47.8% from the field, going 9-23 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 13-18 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with four turnovers. Northwestern finished with five.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (12-12, 8-7 UMAC) is a rematch against North Central University Saturday, February 20 in the regular season finale. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 3:00 p.m.
