Yellowjackets Overcome by North Central

Box Score

North Central 77, Yellowjackets 74

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Saturday afternoon when they took on North Central University. Although they had already clinched a spot in the UMAC playoffs, the Yellowjackets had a chance to move up with a victory over North Central and some other things across the conference.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, North Central proved to be too much to handle as they fell 77-74.

The game started out about as even as they come. North Central came out and took a 5-2 lead with 19:04 remaining in the half. The Yellowjackets responded, as Al Pearson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore) and Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) each scored to give the Yellowjackets a 6-5 lead. The Rams retook the lead on the next possession, but it was short lived as Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) hit a layup with 16:29 remaining in the half to tie up the game at 8-8. The teams went back-and-forth for the next three minutes, before the Yellowjackets were able to create a little separation on a 6-0 run, capped by a pair of Lindblom free throws that gave the Yellowjackets a 20-16 lead with 12:16 remaining.

North Central responded, going on a 5-0 run over the next two minutes to retake the lead from the Yellowjackets. This time it was Taylor Mattison (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake-Willow River) who put the Yellowjackets back on top with an and-1 jumper and free throw on the Yellowjackets next possession. The Yellowjackets would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the half as they went into the break leading 40-38.

The second half started out well for the Yellowjackets. A Schradle layup with 16:28 remaining in the second half pushed the Yellowjacket lead to 48-43. North Central then went on a 6-0 run to take a 49-48 lead with 15:36 remaining. The lead exchanged hands a couple of times after that, with Lindblom hitting a layup with 13:31 remaining to give the Yellowjackets a 52-51 lead.

The Yellowjackets did not see themselves trail for the next eight minutes as they looked to fend off the Rams. North Central managed to retake the lead at 67-65 with 5:30 remaining on a 3-pointer. The Yellowjackets cut the deficit down to one, at 75-74, with 0:19 remaining and it looked as though they may be able to come back. After a pair of North Central free throws with 0:12 remaining the Yellowjackets had the last shot. Schradle got a good look at the tying 3-pointer, but the shot was off the mark as the Yellowjackets fell at home.

Schradle finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. Milenkovic also had 22 points for the Yellowjackets while finishing with seven rebounds. Lindblom was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

North Central was led by Jared High, who finished with 18 points. Josh High added 15 points, while Isaiah Rustad and Joel Cline each chipped in 11 for the Rams.

The Yellowjackets shot 49.2% from the field, going 3-16 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 11-15 from the free throw line.

North Central shot 45.3% from the field, going 11-27 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 8-13 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with 11 turnovers. North Central had four.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (12-13, 8-8 UMAC) is the UMAC Playoffs. The Yellowjackets will travel to Morris, Minn. on Monday, February 22 to take on the University of Minnesota, Morris. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
