Lindblom, Schradle Propel Yellowjackets to Victory

Box Score

Yellowjackets 95, Crown 81

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Friday when they took on UMAC foe Crown College. Barely holding on to a playoff spot, the next couple of games are must-win for the Yellowjackets and that all started with Crown.

The final push towards the playoffs started out right, as the Yellowjackets defeated Crown College 95-81.

The Yellowjackets started out hot in this one as the consistently fed Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) the ball to open up an 11-0 lead with 16:46 remaining. The Yellowjacket lead grew to 16-2 on a Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) layup with 15:20 left and this game had all the semblance of a blowout.

Crown was not about to go away so quickly, as they started chipping away at the Yellowjacket lead over the next 10 minutes, before taking their first lead of the game at 31-30 with 5:12 remaining. The Crown lead was short lived, as Andreas Preisler (Solrod, Denmark/Solrod Gymnasium) hit a jumper with 3:13 remaining to give the Yellowjackets a 34-33 lead. The Yellowjackets would close out the half on a 9-4 run as they went into the break leading 43, 37.

The Yellowjackets jumped all over Crown in the second half, quickly pushing their lead to 10 points on a Milenkovic layup with 17:43 remaining. The Storm tried to fight their way back into the game, but the Yellowjackets went on a 9-0 run, capped by a Lindblom layup to push their lead to 64-48 with 12:06 remaining.

Once again Crown tried to fight their way back into the game, cutting the Yellowjacket lead down to 79-72 with 4:39 remaining. The Yellowjackets went on another run following this and pushed the lead to an insurmountable 16 points with 1:20 remaining. With the game firmly in hand, Yellowjacket Head Coach Paul Eberhardt was able to get some valuable varsity playing time for many of his reserves.

Lindblom and Schradle played like men possessed in this game. Lindbloom finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Schradle finished with 30 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals.

Crown was led by Josh Volness who finished with 22 points. Seth Moan had 17 points and six rebounds, while James Brown chipped in 16. Austin VanDerHeyden finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 52.4% from the field, going 5-13 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 24-34 from the free throw line.

Crown shot 43.1% from the field, going 8-33 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 11-13 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with six turnovers. Crown finished the game with 11.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (11-10, 7-5 UMAC) is a home matchup Saturday, February 6 against Minnesota Morris. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 3:00 p.m.
