Stevens Point Skates Past Yellowjackets

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point 9, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team was in action Saturday night when they played host to WIAC foe UW-Stevens Point. The Yellowjackets were looking to make it two victories in a row, following their 5-2 come from behind victory at UW-River Falls Friday Night.

Six third period goals by the Pointers ensured that there would be no Yellowjacket comeback as they fell at home 9-1.

This game went wrong right from the get go, as the Yellowjackets gave up a shorthanded goal at the 10:38 mark of the first. The goal seemed to take the air out of the building, as the Yellowjackets were forced to play from behind.

Two more Pointer goals at the 1:48 and 15:48 mark of the second appeared to push the Yellowjackets to the brink, as they now stared down a 3-0 deficit. Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior) breathed some life into the Yellowjackets at the 16:57 mark of the second when he found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden) had the assist on the even strength goal.

The second period ended with the Yellowjackets still trailing 3-1, but it felt as though there still may be a chance to pull off the comeback. UW-Stevens Point quickly quashed any of those hopes in the third, as they scored six goals in the period to route the Yellowjackets.

Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane) got the start in net for the Yellowjackets and it was a game he would like to soon forget. Wood finished the game with nine goals allowed and 28 saves. He is now 2-6-0 on the season

At the other end, Jesse Gordichuk got the start in net for the Pointers, allowing one goal while making 29 saves. Gordichuk moves to 5-1-0 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took two penalties for four minutes. The Pointers took five penalties for 10 minutes.

With a quick turnaround between games, the Yellowjackets (8-13-2, 2-4-0) will look to bounce back as they host UW-River Falls on Tuesday, February 8. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM in Superior beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45. If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in online through UW-Superior's exclusive streaming provider, the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
