Yellowjackets Historic Season Ends as they Fall to UW-Oshkosh

Box Score

UW-Oshkosh 63, Yellowjackets 53

It has been a season of firsts for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team this season. This was their first season in the UMAC. They won their first UMAC Regular Season Championship. They then followed that up with their first UMAC Playoff Championship to secure their first ever NCAA Tournament berth.

Friday night in Oshkosh, Wis. the Yellowjacket women's basketball team experienced another first, their first NCAA tournament game in program history. This historic matchup pitted the Yellowjackets against the team that has knocked them out of the playoffs each of the last two seasons, the UW-Oshkosh Titans.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, the third time was not the charm as they fell to the Titans by a final score of 63-53 to cap off the historic 2015-16 season.

Things looked good for the Yellowjackets early in this one, as Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) got a steal and layup to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead 19 seconds into the game. The Titans would take the lead from the Yellowjackets on a three-point play with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter as part of a 7-0 run that saw the Titan lead grow to 9-4 with 4:33 remaining.

Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta)'s jumper with 4:17 remaining in the quarter broke the Titans run, and cut the lead down to 9-6 to make it a one-possession game. Oshkosh responded by scoring the next four points to push their lead back up to 13-6. This time the Yellowjackets rallied, going on a 6-2 run to cut the Titans lead to 16-12 on a Kontny Jumper at the buzzer.

The Yellowjackets came out firing on all cylinders to open the second quarter. They kept up relentless pressure on the Titans, and were able to retake the lead 22-21 on a pair of Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) free throws with 6:11 remaining in the second quarter. The lead was short lived, as Oshkosh closed out the quarter on a 14-3 run, sending the Yellowjackets into the halftime break trailing 35-25.

The Yellowjackets have been a third quarter team all season, and Friday night was no different. The Yellowjackets went right to work facing a double-digit deficit. Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) hit a layup with 8:28 remaining in the quarter to cut the deficit down to 36-27. Then Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) hit a 3-pointer at 7:37 to cut the deficit to 36-30.

The Yellowjackets continued to do what they have done all season, playing relentless defense and taking advantage of offensive opportunities, as they cut the Titan lead down to 42-38 with 2:38 remaining. Oshkosh responded with a 3-pointer to push the lead up to 45-38, but the Yellowjackets scored the final three points of the quarter to go into the final break trailing 45-41.

Oshkosh scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to push their lead to 50-41, as t
he early deficit proved to be too much to overcome. The Yellowjackets were never able to close the game to closer than five points the rest of the way, as they saw their season once again come to an end at the hands of the Titans.

Kontny led the Yellowjackets in this one, finishing with a game-high 20 points. Nelson finished with eight points for the Yellowjackets.

Oshkosh was led by Alex Richard, who finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Neustifter and Eliza Campbell finished with 10 points apiece for the Titans.

The Yellowjackets shot 41.9% from the field, going 3-10 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 14-18 from the free throw line.

Oshkosh shot 42.3% from the field, going 7-18 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 12-15 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with 20 turnovers. The Titans finished the game with 17.

The Yellowjackets finish the 2015-16 regular season with a program-record 24 wins and four losses.
