The University of Wisconsin Superior did not get its season off to the start it wanted as the Yellowjacket defense held tough but the No. 20-ranked Macalester College edged UW-Superior in overtime 1-0 in St. Paul, Minnesota on Thursday afternoon.
Macalester (1-0-0) tallied the game-winner with 3:53 remaining in the first overtime session when the Yellowjackets (0-1-0) could not clear a ball in front of the net that Jake Burke redirected from the right to make the score. Danny Baumann had the lone assist on the play for the Scots. The teams collected just five shots apiece in the first half with each goalkeeper making three saves on the afternoon. Senior
Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) played all 96+ minutes for the Yellowjackets while senior Zeke Vanier stopped every shot for Macalester.
Senior midfielder
Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos H.S.) had a pair of shots in his return to the line-up. Junior mid
Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley H.S.) had one shot-on-goal off the bench. Burke had two shots on the afternoon to lead the Scots.
