The University of Wisconsin Superior controlled the pace of play despite playing a man down for the final 35 minutes of the game, but Bethel University struck to break the scoreless tie in the waning seconds of the first extra session to hand the Yellowjackets a second-straight overtime 1-0 defeat at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior, Wisconsin on Monday afternoon.
UW-Superior (0-2-0) held the ball in the Royals' offensive zone for the majority of the game, and Bethel (2-1-0) was out-shot 23-8 including 13-4 in on-target attempts, but Josh De la Rosa uncorked a high-arcing shot from the right side from approximately 25 yards out with just 4 seconds remaining in the first overtime to push the Royals over the top. Spencer Pearson had the lone assist for Bethel.
The teams combined for 34 fouls on the day, and each was assessed four yellow cards while the Yellowjackets added a red card at the start of the 65th minute that forced them to play a man down in the final 25 minutes of regulation and all of overtime. Junior midfielder
Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos H.S.) led the way with three shots-on-goal for UW-Superior. Sophomore midfielders
Danny Kearns (Greenock, Scotland/Clydeview Academy) and
Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) each added a pair.
Senior goalkeeper
Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) takes the hard-luck loss between the pipes for the Yellowjackets, making three saves, while Jakob Bartels made 12 stops for the Royals.
