The University of Wisconsin Superior finally broke through on the scoreboard, ending a three-game shutout streak to start the season with three goals of their own but could not contain Simpson (Iowa) College on Saturday afternoon as the Yellowjackets fell 4-3 to the Storm in Moorhead, Minnesota.
UW-Superior (0-4-0) fell behind early thanks to a pair of quick scores by Simpson's Garrett Pochop, getting the Storm (3-1-0) on the board just 90 seconds into the game while adding another tally just six minutes later. Simpson's Darius Darwell tacked on a third goal at the 10:53 mark of the opening half. The Yellowjacket defense closed up from there with senior goalkeeper
Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) able to stop the final five balls to head his way in the half before being spelled by sophomore
Josh Herd (Hamilton, Scotland/Calderside Academy) at the break.
With some irony for a team that had yet to score on the young season, UW-Superior finally got on the board in the 26th minute courtesy of an own goal by the Storm defense. That opened up the door though, and senior midfielder
Ryan Linsmayer (Dresser, Wis./Osceola) tacked on a second score just three minutes later, pulling the Yellowjackets within one goal as both teams headed to the locker room.
UW-Superior out-shot Simpson in the second half, but the Storm scored their fourth goal nine minutes into the stanza, with Collin Hemann assisted by Colin Robinson. The Yellowjackets had seven shots to Simpson's four in t he final 45 minutes, but the Storm out-shot UWS 15-13 overall in the game. Superior's goalkeepers combined for seven saves while Simpson had just four.
Senior midfielder
David Villani (Adelaide, South Australia/Rostrevor College) pulled the Yellowjackets back within one in the 89th minute, but it proved too little too late as UW-Superior fell on the neutral field.
