The University of Wisconsin Superior saw its home opener by Saint Mary's University as the Cardinals used four second-half goals to knock off the Yellowjackets 4-0 at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon in Superior.
Junior goalkeeper
Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul H.S.) turned away eight shots by Saint Mary's (2-3-1) in the first half, preserving the shutout despite UW-Superior (0-4-0) being out-shot 14-1 in the opening frame. SMU added to its lead at 67:28, when Abby Lafko headed in a Shelly Wing corner kick. The Cardinals had 10 corner kicks in the game, while UW-Superior had just one. Saint Mary's added another score just under ten minutes later, their second unassisted tally of the game, when Hailey Cottle line a shot from 15 yards out to the corner of the net out of the reach of the diving goalkeeper. Another ten minutes later, Bridgett Leverich added a dagger fourth goal that put the game out of hand with just over three minutes remaining.
Junior midfielder
Britt Zieroth (Twig, Minn./Proctor H.S.) and forward
Amanda Ambrose (Columbus, Ohio/Ramstein(Germany) H.S.) each had two shots for the game. Henderson finished with 10 saves for UW-Superior while Gabriella Pederson had one save to preserve the shutout for Saint Mary's.
