The University of Wisconsin Superior had without a doubt its strongest defensive effort of the season but could not capitalize as the Yellowjackets fell 1-0 in their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener against border rival the College of St. Scholastica at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
UW-Superior (0-5-0, 0-1-0 UMAC) played a defensive-minded game that pushes St. Scholastica (3-3-2, 2-0-1 UMAC) to the outside, preventing great scoring opportunities for the high-octane offense usually on display from the Saints. Junior goalkeeper
Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul H.S.) made nine stops on the day for the Yellowjackets, but CSS broke through with the eventual game-winner in the 23rd minute as Taylor Olson tapped a through-ball to the middle of the net that Peyton Basco drilled home to put the Saints up 1-0.
The Yellowjackets broke through with a few chances of their own in the second half, with St. Scholastica 'keeper Roni Rudolph turned away UW-Superior's best look when freshman midfielder
Etta Sorenson (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville H.S.) tried to tap a ball past the diving Rudolph in the second half. Sophomore midfielder
Kelli Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg H.S.) and forward
Amanda Ambrose (Columbus, Ohio/Ramstein(Germany) H.S.) also had a shot for the Yellowjackets after the break. The Saints' Olson led all players with six shots, four on-goal.
