UW-Superior offense breaks through in second half for second-straight win knocking off Northland

The University of Wisconsin Superior picked up its second-straight victory as the Yellowjackets' offense exploded for for four second-half goals to knock off Northland College 5-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on the road Wednesday afternoon in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Senior forward Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) had four points, and freshman forward Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold H.S.) had two goals as UW-Superior (2-6-0, 2-0-0 UMAC) won going away for the second consecutive game since the start of UMAC play last week. Wisdom got the scoring started in the 25th minute, tallying his first of the year. Senior goalkeeper Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) played the first half between the pipes for UW-Superior, making two saves to take the 1-0 lead into the half. He was relieved by sophomore Josh Herd (Hamilton, Scotland/Calderside Academy) after the break, when the Yellowjacket offense took control of the game.

After assisting on Wisdom's first half score, junior forward Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) picked up his second goal of the season at the 55:54 mark of the match with Wisdom picking up the helper. Wisdom set up UW-Superior's third goal as well, getting the one-tough to junior midfielder Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley H.S.) to push the lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute. Northland ( ) got on the board just 2:30 later as Oscar Larsson notched a goal for the LumberJacks, but the team would get no closer. Watson scored his goals in the 75th and 84th minutes to put the Yellowjackets over the top.

UW-Superior totalled 50 shots in the match, including 23 on-goal. Northland had just seven shots and three on-target. Bucklew had eight shots on the day while Solis had seven. Ten different Yellowjackets had at least three attempts.

UW-Superior will return home this Saturday afternoon as the team plays host to Crown College in UMAC action. The Yellowjackets and Storm will kick off at 4:15 p.m., following the women's contest at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex.
