A day before a match-up between the two top-rated teams headed into the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference season, the University of Wisconsin Superior continued its winning streak in a laugher, knocking off North Central University 84-55 at Mortorelli Gym on Friday night before welcoming the University of Northwestern to Superior on Saturday afternoon.
UW-Superior (13-4, 9-0 UMAC) made it four straight victories and extended its undefeated 29-0 mark since joining the conference prior to last season. The Yellowjackets closed the opening half on a 38-5 run, turning an early 17-12 deficit into a 50-22 halftime lead. They never looked back from there, as head coach
Don Mulhern relied heavily on his reserves in the second half, getting 46 points off the bench against North Central (3-12, 1-8 UMAC).
Junior guard
Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) had 18 points to lead all scorers, while junior
Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton H.S.) had 13 points off the bench. Freshman
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) added 12 points as well as a reserve. Annabel Morrisroe and Lizzy Swanson each had 14 points for the Rams. North Central shot 40.0 percent for the game (20-of-50) but turned the ball over 25 times on the night. UW-Superior shot 40.7 percent (33-of-81) while knocking down 6-of-17 three-pointers. The Yellowjackets had a game-high 42-point lead early in the fourth quarter while holding on to an eventual 29-point lead after a late North Central rally.
